About Prof. P. Das

MA, CGL, PGCTE (The English and Foreign Languages University)

P Das is a scholar who is best known for his deep knowledge in the English language and literature. Other than his vast knowledge in the English Literature, he is also expert in linguistics, phonetics and several European languages including Ancient Greek, Latin, German, French etc. Expertise in linguistics, phonetics and knowledge in different European languages is crucial to teach English Philology and Prosody, the most intricate areas in BA English Honours and MA courses. That is why P Das is the most trusted faculty in these fields in India. Besides, with the profound knowledge in the ancient Greek and Latin literature and the Biblical studies, he adeptly decodes the symbolic codes lying in the English literature. He has published Vibrant Voices from American Poetry (ISBN: 978-81-88453-24-5), a reference book recommended for the Calcutta University Syllabi (BA English Honours, Part-III and MA Part-II) published by Indian Books View. Presently he is writing an authentic textbook on English Philology meant for different Indian Universities including the University of Calcutta.

This book contains a few American Poems with Critical Approaches as well as Comprehensive Explanatory Notes, meant for different categories of readers, from the university students to the poetry enthusiasts.

Modern poetry is allusive and ‘difficult’; it demands extensive annotations and contextualization in order to be properly appreciated. Hence, Historical and Literary Background and line-by-line explanations are provided as well. These are all informed by archival scholarship, and an extensive use of both published and unpublished material.

Some Intricate Areas Prof. P Das excels in

I.                    Interpretation of Literature (Spanning the whole syllabi of BA Hons. and MA)

English literature is greatly indebted to the classical literature, i.e. Greek (e.g. Homer, Aeschylus etc.) and Latin (e.g., Virgil), and to the Bible. To make students well versed in these, he organizes additional classes or seminars on Homer’s The Iliad and The Odyssey and the Bible along with their symbolic interpretations. These are crucial to understand the inner meanings of English literature.

II.                  Philology (in 1st year syllabus)

Philology is one of the most intricate areas in BA Honours (English) syllabus. To handle this field expertly, it is necessary to have (i) a sound knowledge of German as English has come from the Germanic language family, and (ii) specialization in linguists, as philology deals with the growth and structure of English. In the heart of West Bengal, only he explains it with expertise so that students acquire the subject with much interest and enthusiasm.

III.                Prosody (in 3rd Year syllabus)

Prosody is another different area in the English Honours syllabus. Without specialization in phonetics, it is next to impossible to handle the chapter skilfully. The most skilled and experienced Prof P Das has expertise in this field.

IV.               Creative Writing (in 3rd Year)

So many students are there to speak fluent English but most of them feel a writers’ block when they are to write an article on film-review or an essay. To unlock this block, he applies his expertise of Pedagogy of Developing Writing Skill.

V.                 Linguistics, Phonetics and Modern Grammar (in MA syllabus)

P Das is the best teacher (in West Bengal and many other states) in the field of Linguistics, Phonetics and Modern Grammar included in one of the eight papers of English MA course. He uses a fine and up-to-date mini language laboratory to make students well versed in these fields.
